I entered my grandparent’s apartment in Howard Beach, Queens to find the same smell of fish from the bay permeating the walls and the same sly smile greeting me at the door. Everything felt the same, but everything was different.

I was no longer a carefree child running through the halls. I was now a teenager aware of the world’s most pressing issues. I wanted to escape my bleak reality; I wanted to live without the constant friction of latex gloves between my hands; I wanted to forget the sound of Purell landing on my fingertips.

While I couldn’t come to terms with the present, my grandpa accepted his isolated and confined reality. He perpetually spent his days in his chair viewing the news and the slow drift of smoke coating the walls. Every weekend I would visit him and watch the haze of smoke linger in the air.
